I am officially giving my blog an IOU in the vain attempt I might actually listen to myself. So, here it goes…
I need to write a blog post about Comcast being a ripe with idiocy, if for nothing else but to have a place to point rather than tell the same story ten times.
I need to change my blog software. Atleast give it a shot. Wordpress rocks, it just doesn’t match my style. I’m thinking of getting a blog/wiki hybrid. Here is the list as far as I have it.
- WikyBlog - PHP/MySQL - Feature rich
- WikePage - PHP/MySQL - Feature tiny
- TipiWiki
- MoniWiki
Instiki is also in the running, though as a pure wiki. The idea is fairly simple, once I have a hybrid, I can use the blog part to post complete thoughts and the wiki part to jot down ideas and quick notes.
For starters, I’d like to get my FreeBSD thoughts written down. Config files, bootstrapping process, ports. I’d like to be able to use my blog as a personal search engine. It’s an interesting concept to be sure, and as funny as it sounds, I think other people might be able to use it too. To be honest, I’d be willing to move this whole thing over to the Fort Awesome website and have others contribute. I’ll bring up the idea with the other Fort Awesome people. The biggest loss would be my site would be tough to navigate and uglier. I like the current site because anybody can navigate it and it is really nice to look at thanks to my awesome theme. I’ll sleep on it.

Being in Minnesota, it is often difficult to chat with my friends in St. Louis. I tried many different pieces of software, but they all failed. Even my beloved Apple’s iChat required some bizarre voodoo involving sacrificing a goat and patching 3-4 ports through a firewall.
Enter…

In 5 minutes, with no configuration I was up and running using my Apple iSight… for free! I was behind two firewalls, as was my partner in crime Lane. So for the moment, Skype is my chatting network of choice, atleast, when it comes to multimedia chatting. I’ll still keep Jabber around because I like not having a company in charge of the servers I use to connect to my chatting system. That said for Skype, I’d be willing to break the rules.

And I’m back. Well, actually, its more like I’m out. Due to some very sneaky play calling by bacterial pneumonia, it turns out I will not be returning to Washington University in St. Louis this semester. Never fear! Quick thinking and lots of help from Melanie Osborn in the registrar’s office and I am back in business. I will be taking two to three courses general education courses at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Since I will not be near my friends, and the only people who bother to read this blog, I plan on updating it so people know what trouble I’ve been brewing while away.
The real highlight of this Spring (besides a vanquishing a crippling pneumonia) is that I will be working with Dr. William Sommers at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Sommers is a very well credentialed educator and administrator, and I will be working with him, Jane Stevenson, and Jenn Hartmyn to work on integrating technology into the classroom and helping schools prepare students for the future. I plan on giving several presentations on the emergence of web applications in education, open source software in education, and the new technologies available for group and community learning paradigms. With any luck there will be some quicktime movies appearing on this site in the near future.

My application with the previously mentioned Summer of Code was denied. There were a record number of Ruby on Rails applications and none of them were accepted. Yikes! Still, I look forward to the results from other students efforts. Of note, I am looking forward to integrating libjingle with Adium as it will give my favorite instant messaging client audio/video support.
In a way, not having summer of code to take up my time allowed me to pick up an internship out in Santa Clara, California working with the fine gentlemen at Gig Avenue. I spent the first few weeks learning the ropes of the data center, and now I have graduated to actual infastructure work and a few on-site customer
consultations. I have even had a chance to flex my engineering muscle a bit working on some internal projects, soon to be released publicly.
I plan on updating this blog a bit more once I figure out how I want it structured. I debate between keeping it in its current format, or spliting it in two. I could move all of my technical things to a new site and use this site to keep friends and family in the loop. I am not sure which way I have decided to go yet.

Welcome to my blog. Hopefully I’ll be keeping this somewhat up-to-date with my technical rants and so forth. Stay tuned!
